The Prophet (SAW) said “the example of a believer who recites Qur’an is that of a citron (a citrus fruit) which is good in taste and good in smell.”
In the Hadith Nabi (SAW) gives the example of a citrus fruit, if you think about it,
The orange – the outer peel is hard, then it has a thick white covering underneath the peel and in the middle there’s the seed. To peel an orange one will need to bite a small piece of the peel to create a grip to start peeling. But when one bites into the orange it’s very bitter because of the citronella oil. In the same way, the first step in learning to recite Qur’an correctly is bitter and difficult like the first bite of an orange, as you progress it becomes easier until you can taste the sweetness of your efforts like the sweet part of the orange. It doesn’t end there , you still have the seed which you have to plant , so that’s where we understand the hadith ” the best amongst you is he who learns the Qur’an and teaches it” so by teaching others you planting your seeds for the Aakhirah.
The Mandarin- it is hollow in the centre and the peel is soft and easy to remove, for some the road of perfecting their Qur’an is easier than others but the seed is always at the end for us to plant.
Not forgetting the rich vitamin C aroma that emanates from the fruit. Someone sitting next to you can smell if you are eating an orange. Some might even feel for that orange. By being a person who reads Qur’an regularly, the noor of that will get passed on and others will be encouraged.
Vitamin C is taken in winter to prevent flus and to prevent us from feeling down and depressed. The spiritual Vitamin C is the recitation of the Qur’an.
Citronella Oil comes from oranges which prevents mosquitos, the world is likened to the wing of a mosquito. So by reading Qur’an we are keeping the world away and banking our rewards for Aakhirah!
