7 Reasons Why You Should Start A Home Business

Home Business

I know a lot of women who either don’t want to start a business, for various reasons, or feel incapable of starting one. So I put together 7 really good reasons why I think every woman/stay-at-home-mum should start a business – even if it’s just from the comfort of your home.

And, no, so you can go to work in your pyjamas is not a reason! :)

I hope that I can convince you to take the steps to start a business from your own home after reading this.

Here goes:

  • IT GIVES YOU A PURPOSE.

What do you do in your spare time? (And don’t say you don’t have spare time). I used to waste my days away, lounging around, eating(!), “just chillin’ ” … and then I would complain that my life lacked purpose. True purpose in life comes by striving (REALLY STRIVING!) every day to make the the time to do something that brings you joy and contentment. When you have a purpose in life you will find yourself waking early and you will never waste another day doing ,well… nothing.

  • YOU ARE USING YOUR BRAIN.

You often hear mothers of small babies and toddlers saying they feel like they don’t use their brains much anymore. Pregnancy brain is a thing – and it extends into early motherhood, too. Things like changing a diaper, or playing hide and seek are  eventually transferred to autopilot mode by your brain.

Perhaps before kids they were studying towards a degree, or finishing school, taking some extra classes but now there’s no time for that. This is the best reason for starting a home based business.

Starting a business requires learning new skills – business management skills. While that might sound daunting, it really isn’t and you’ll learn things as you need the new information. There’s no tests involved but every day you’ll be learning new things. You’ll be using your brain again! WHOOP WHOOP! :D

  • IT CHANGES THINGS UP.

Are you experiencing monotony right now? Every day is exactly the same as yesterday. And that can really drain you of energy. You feel tired and dare I say, bored?

Starting a business changes things up. You have stuff to do. You have deadlines. You have customers to please. How exciting! The easiest way to get a boost of energy is to change things up (and I’m speaking from my own experience here).

  • YOU DEVELOP BETTER TIME-MANAGEMENT SKILLS.

This is a big one. In fact, it deserves it’s own post.

Let me break it down…

When you find something you are truly passionate about, you want to spend all of your waking hours on it (if you could).  Obviously there are things that need to be done… you have responsibilities. In order to fit in what you want to do in between what you have to do you have to make the time for it! (I wish someone had told me this 10 yeas ago!)

If you have kids this means waking up 1 hour earlier than them, making use of nap times, organising your home so that cleaning it doesn’t take up so much of your precious time. Time management might seem daunting but it is such a great skill to learn. It will literally change your life.

And what better reason to learn and implement this skill than to pursue your dream business!

  • REDISCOVER YOUR DREAMS.

Speaking of dreams…

When you were in high school and you imagined your future, what did it look like? I was a dreamer. I envisioned myself as a very successful person. I guess my thoughts stemmed from my perfectionistic nature.

So let me tell you what the best thing is about dreams. It’s not fulfilling them. If I gave you a million dollars to buy your dream home you would be elated – but for how long? Soon you would lack purpose again and would probably lose interest in your home.

The best thing about dreams is…

Working towards them. Knowing how much of your effort went into making that million dollars yourself as apposed to someone handing it to you – that feeling can never be bought. It is the process of working towards all your dreams in life that make them worth it in the end.

  • YOU WILL BE A ROLE MODEL FOR YOUR KIDS.

My kids see me working. They see me striving towards something every day.

In my previous attempts at starting a business (and there were many) I often lacked the motivation to work on them because they didn’t excite me as much as they should have.

Now that I have a purpose-driven business I love to include the kids in my work. When I’m doing design work they like to add their input about what colours to use and where to place elements. I love that I can share my passions with them and I hope that this will encourage them when they are older to find and pursue their own passions.

  • OF COURSE! MAKE YOUR OWN MONEY!

Last but not least you want to make your own money. Whether you want to improve your life, want to save up for big ticket items, or want to have financial freedom to invest in your self, see the world, take care of old parents. Whatever you want to do, money is great motivation to start a business.

Making money is probably the hardest part of starting a business. It takes loads of work, dedication, skill and learning to make money.  And you often need money before you start.
